Man jailed for sexually assaulting woman in Lambeth

A man who sexually assaulted a woman has been jailed for five years.

Carlos Torres Paute, 30 (28.1.87) of Cassell House, Stockwell Gardens Estate, was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, 14 June having previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault and kidnapping/falsely imprisoning his victim with intent to commit a sexual offence.

On Sunday, 2 April at around 04:00hrs the 22-year-old victim, having been out with friends, walked from Stockwell station down Binfield Road, SW4. She was followed by Paute.

He then approached her and against her will took her into a secluded area next to a block of flats where he sexually assaulted her.

A passing member of the public bravely intervened and Paute fled.

Police were alerted and began an investigation.

CCTV clearly showed the suspect approaching the victim. Officers were able to trace his movements through the area due to a pair of distinctive red trousers he was wearing. He was seen loitering in the area before the attack, and initially followed, but did not approach, two other women.

A media appeal was issued which Paute, who lived opposite Stockwell tube, saw. He handed himself into Brixton police station on 10 April and was arrested.

Searches of his home revealed the clothing he was wearing that night, including the red trousers, and he was subsequently charged.

The judge commended the member of the public who intervened.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Suzanne Jordan, from the Met’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: “Paute is a sexual predator who was laying in wait that night for a suitable woman to walk past who he could attack.

“The victim was naturally terrified and it is fortunate that a member of the public saw what was happened and intervened, shortening her dreadful ordeal. I would like to thank that member of the public who came to her aid as well as commending the victim’s bravery in helping police and getting us to the position of Torres Paute being jailed today.”
