Australia 2-3 Germany – Lars Stindl, Julian Draxler and Leon Goretzka net in nervy Confederations Cup 2017 win

Lars Stindl, Julian Draxler and Leon Goretzka all net for Germany to give them a 3-2 victory over Australia in their Confederations Cup 2017 opener.

The current World Cup winners were twice pegged back by the unfancied Australians in Sochi.

Stindl handed the Germans a fifth minute lead, as they dominated the first half.

Brandt cut back after a run down the line to find the Borussia Monchengladbach front man in acres of space in the middle of the box.

Three minutes later Germany had the lead again when Luongo hacked down Goretzka from behind in the box – with Draxler stroking home the spot kick.

Schalke man Goretzka regained his side’s two goal lead just after the interval as he cottoned onto Kimmich’s perfect through ball to smash past new Brighton keeper Mats Ryan.
