It’s one of those transfer rumours that makes fans of every club sit up and take notice.
If you’re interested in Premier League football, the news that Chelsea are pursuing a deal for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will have you shaking your head in disbelief.
After all, Aguero is a proven, world class centre-forward. In fact, he is statistically the Premier League’s finest ever goalscorer, scoring more frequently than any other player in the competition’s history:
So, even if he is no longer in Pep Guardiola’s plans, would Manchester City really allow a player of Aguero’s quality to join a fellow Premier League title challenger?
With the number of top class attacking players now on the books at the Etihad, and with Chelsea’s interest in the striker being described as ‘strong and serious’, anything is possible.
Just imagine what would happen if the deal ever got over the line…
1. The notion that any transfer is possible in the current market would scramble the brains of many Premier League fans
“If Aguero can go to Chelsea, then what else can happen? Mesut Ozil to Tottenham? Philippe Coutinho to Manchester United?
“THE GAME’S GONE MAD! IT’S ALL TOO MUCH! STOP THE INSANITY!”
2. Pep Guardiola will do one of those little shrugs in his first press conference after the transfer is announced
You know the one we mean. It’s the classic Guardiola response to a story he’s not keen on: make sure it appears you are baffled by all the fuss and continue to act like like it’s not a big deal.
Even though it blatantly is.
3. Man United fans would be both happy…
On the one hand, United fans would be delighted the guy whose City goal was responsible for THAT title heartbreak was no longer a City player.
4. …and sad
On the other, they would have to go from mocking Chelsea over Romelu Lukaku to begrudgingly admitting that Chelsea have signed a Premier League goal machine.
5. Arsenal fans would get very nervous
Man City wouldn’t let a top player like Aguero leave unless they were convinced they already had more than enough up front to compensate.
Given that the Alexis to City rumours have been getting stronger all summer, expect any Aguero move to be met by Arsenal supporters immediately giving up all hope.
6. Diego Costa might start to feel a little silly
“I can do whatever I want!
“I have all the cards!
“I’m not going anywhere but back to Atletico – and Chelsea can’t do anything about it!
“I’m the man! Up yours, Antonio!”
*hears about Aguero*
7. David Luiz would start to consider how he might welcome the new man
Given the history of the relationship between the Argentina striker and the Brazil defender, that first training session together at Cobham would be interesting…
Where will Sergio Aguero be at the start of the season?
