Sorry Arsenal and Liverpool, Real Madrid have entered the race now.
The Premier League pair’s interest in Monaco hotshot Kylian Mbappe was widely reported earlier this summer, but now that the Spanish giants have muscled in on the man most likely to become the world’s newly most expensive footballer then there only looks to be one winner.
Whatever Real want, Real usually get – except for Cristiano Ronaldo’s toys to stay in his pram , obviously – and this just looks to be the beginning of a charm offensive to attract Mbappe to the Spanish capital.
Real know just how to play things from here, and as the wheels of the move begin to turn, here are some things that are likely to happen before Mbappe makes his switch.
Five, to be exact.
1. Flattery (it’ll get you everywhere)
This one has already started, in truth, but you can expect the efforts to get louder and louder over the next few weeks as Real’s interest firms up and the player’s head gets turned firmly in the direction of the Bernabeu.
In a week or so’s time he won’t just be “one of the greatest” but THE actual greatest, as his ego is flattered so much that he’ll be expecting to see a statue of himself when he does finally arrive.
2. Deny that they’ve done what they’ve just done
“We said what? Oh, no no no. We wouldn’t dream of that. He’s Monaco’s player and we never talk about other clubs’ players. Never have and never will.
“Now if you excuse me, Jurgen Klopp’s on the line to recommend us some good restaurants in Blackpool.”
3. Link themselves to another player
Marca are normally the go-to publication for this, as Real try to panic a selling club into thinking that the deal is no longer on the table because they’ve shifted their attentions to someone else.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang might be the man this time around, but whoever it is will just be a smokescreen to allow Real to get closer to the object of their desire, and although everyone will know this we’ll still all just go along with it anyway.
Modern football eh?
4. Put in a low bid, see it rejected, then force the player to agitate for the move
This one has become a time-honoured way of dealing with big transfers, as it both illustrates that a club is interested and that a player wants to go in equal measure.
Monaco will reject Real’s first offer for Mbappe, and that in turn will anger the Frenchman so much that he’ll be forced to hit out at his current club (with Real’s blessing).
A complete breakdown of trust envelops from there, and there’s only one way that this is now going to go… *evil laugh*
With an unhappy Mbappe on their hands (however fun that is to say), Monaco accept Real’s second offer (an amount that they were always prepared to pay in the first place) and the player makes his way to the club of his dreams.
Admit it, you know it’s going to end exactly like this don’t you?
Will Kylian Mbappe join Real Madrid this summer?
